Stand By Me

Plot
The plot of the short story and the movie are somewhat different. Parts of the movie where in different places in the short story. In the movie Gordie did not get in a fight with the store clerk. At the end of the movie it goes straight to where Gordie is an adult, in the short story, there are more events that take place after the journey like Gordie, Vern, and Chris get beat up. The story tells how three of the kids die and in the movie Chris is the only one that dies at the end. The movie also does not tell about Ace later in life.

Point of View
The story is told by Gordie. The movie is mostly dialogue. If the movie was like the book then it would not be as interesting because we would not know all of the other boys emotions. We get a better understanding of the characters and how they are feeling in the movie, rather than the book. We see how Chris truly feels about stealing the milk money. The movie is more in depth, point of view wise.

Characterization
Two flashbacks are added in the movie to reveal Gordie's relationship with his brother Denny. The first flashback is when Denny gives Gordie a Yankees baseball hat. That shows that Denny likes his brother and is close with Gordie. Another flashback is added when Gordie is eating dinner with his family. His dad talks about Denny and football all the time so Denny mentions Gordie's writing skills to his father but all his father cares about is Denny and his football career. Gordie is hated by his parents and do no care about him. All they cared about was Denny. These two flashbacks in the movie made Gordie's and Denny's relationship stronger than it was in the short story.

Setting
There are a couple differences in the setting of the movie and short story. In the movie, the year is 1959 opposed to 1960 in the short story. Also, he movie takes place all they way across the nation in Oregon. The short story takes place in Maine. There are no major differences that change the meaning of the story. They both are small towns and the places in the journey are the same as the ones in the short story.

Theme
The theme stays the same throughout the movie and the short story. In both the movie and short story they stay together as one to make their journey successful. The stand together so they can claim the body and scare away the older gang. The boys are there for each other. Chris is always looking out for Gordie and wants the best for him like a good friend should do. They have each others back through the movie and the short story. All of these thing can be seen in the movie and short story.
